What Is Righteousness?

In Matthew 5:20, Christ says, “Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.” What is righteousness? We often hear the word being thrown around but do we understand its meaning? How is a Christian’s righteousness to exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees?
