Deceptions in Spiritual Formation

How can we be sure our spiritual practices are bringing us closer to God, not a counterfeit? When the New Age experience has all the outward signs of Christianity, disguised as the religion of Jesus, it becomes difficult to perceive danger. Lectio divina, contemplative prayer, and the use of spiritual directors are just a few of the tools being promoted as ways to spiritual maturity. But are there dangers mixed in with these components of spiritual formation? When error mingles with truth it becomes all the more dangerous.
